What does T.I.M. stand for?
T.I.M. stands for the Tiered Instructional Model (TIM) for reading instruction.
What is a Tiered Instructional Model and what is the goal?
The TIM model looks slightly different at each grade level, but the goal for all is to have all of our students actively engaged in the reading process for at least one hour a day. The instructional groups are “flexible” and will change throughout the school year. They are designed to support and meet the needs of all children as they learn to read, or continue on their reading journey, as well as understand and apply appropriate grade-level literacy skills.
How do I know my child's needs are being met?
After analyzing our literacy assessment data, conducting classroom observations, and using our knowledge of the stages of reading development, we placed all children in a “flexible” literacy group based on his/her individual needs and learning style. In first grade students may meet with a number of different regular education support professionals, including the classroom teacher, the reading specialist, the Title 1 teacher, and reading tutors. Our Differentiated Reading Instruction team will meet regularly to monitor student literacy progress. If data shows that a student's needs would be best met in another group, the team will reconvene and make the appropriate placement for that child.
If my child switches their reading group or classroom should I be concerened?
DON'T PANIC! One of the great aspects of "flexible grouping" is that it is FLEXIBLE for a reason! As stated before we are constantly analyzing data to make sure our students are receiving the appropriate support. Sometimes there will be small movements made where it may be only a few students switching into other groups. Other times we find that there are large shifts within the grade level. This is normal and there is nothing to be concerned about!
If my child moves into another reading group or classroom will I be notified?
It is common for there to be movement. We often will not notify you every time you child moves. Please trust that we will meet with you if we have any concerns regarding your child's reading progress! Have no fear! That's why we're here!
How does The Daily 5 fit into T.I.M.?
During the Daily 5 the students engage in independent and group work. It is a student driven classroom structure that supports learning. It allows for students to fully engage in meaningful work while the teacher is meeting with smaller groups of students.
Each classroom recognizes and focuses on the importance of the 5 main components of reading:
Reading to self
Reading to someone
Listening to reading
Working with words
Working on writing (this component will mostly be done back in the students' homerooms)
